"Starlight" - comments
Quite a few of my songs/lyrics focus on the enjoyment and appreciation of apparently simple aspects of living. In this case sitting in a field on a warm summer night, admiring the night sky above a pastoral landscape, and enjoying a glass of iced tea. The Milky Way is simply astonishing and I am almost wordless when I speak with friends who have never seen it. Clearly far too much time has been invested in cities or otherwise brightly lit areas. Starlight speaks of the incredible world and universe that we are so deeply fortunate to inhabit. What an amazing contemplative experience sitting at our fingertips, yet so often ignored. Ah well… It took me a very long time to come up with the final arrangement for the song. I actually recorded three completely different versions, unsure of what would feel best. In the end I settled on a comparatively simple bass line which underlies often overlapping verses. For me the arrangement feels like a peaceful night. It also allows space for a listener to find him or herself in the music and to metaphorically sit with me and the spirits of so many others as we contemplate the immediate and the infinite. To quietly give thanks. Yeah, I know its a lot, but there it is. where to listen |
starlight
sitting here tonight I gaze up at the stars rolled bales of hay in the foreground scattered all across the field they roll away washed by the light of the star shine an iced tea sweating in my hand a cool breeze on my brow the scent of fresh cut hay ever always, just waiting sitting with you here tonight a watcher of the skies marveling that the past is present in my eyes star light, star bright the first star I see tonight I wish I may, I wish I might have the wish I wish tonight a distant storm cloud resting quietly on the earth glowing within, reaching upward a single bird floats gently off into the sky the peace of night engulfs me the milky way reveals itself just waiting to be seen there all along, all along just waiting a star seems to be speaking of hay, iced tea, and life of hopes and dreams and fears and everything I might - be star light, star bright the first star I see tonight I wish I may, I wish I might have the wish I wish tonight all instruments and vocals glenn
