a crack in the ceiling
the floor feels cool on my back looking up I notice a crack in the ceiling it takes me away nearby a spider, named dakota approaches the crack her eight legs dancing. I see the crack as a shoreline patiently stretching north to south the tide moving in dakota sticks three legs into the ocean but she quickly scampers away fearful of being swept up in emotion I hear waves crashing and seagulls coasting above me. the crack is the mighty Mississippi shimmering in the sunlight crawling into the future. I’m the captain of a steamship dakota’s my first mate as we flow down the river dakota seems so happy watching the river, we smile, we’re at peace listening to the steady beat of the paddlewheel. the crack is a snake on a trail coiled at one moment, resting the next cautiously surveying the surroundings dakota slowly backs away eyes twitching, fearful but I just smile and say come on dakota even snakes need a break. the crack is a bolt of lightening that’s stretching across the sky the electricity in the air makes me tingle the sweet smell of ozone fills the room I think I hear raindrops nearby as dakota turns to leave, scurrying to a dark corner she leaves me alone the cool floor on my back. I notice a crack in the ceiling. it’s a highway winding across the plains a vapor trail in the moonlight. all instruments and vocals glenn
